The Oyo State Government has directed traders, artisans, motor dealers, and vendors occupying pedestrian walkways and roadside spaces to vacate the areas or face penalties.

The warning was issued by the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) Chairman, Major Adesagba Adekoya (Rtd), at his office secretariat in Ibadan.

Adekoya stated that using walkways for business is illegal and creates traffic bottlenecks, accidents, and inconvenience for shoppers.

He identified hot-spot locations where illegal trading is prevalent, including University of Ibadan (U.I.) area, Samonda, Mokola, and others.

Traders are required to relocate to designated market spaces immediately, especially during the festive period.

Adekoya warned that non-compliance will result in fines and court appearances.

The Oyo State Government commended OYRTMA’s efforts to improve road safety and public order, and reiterated its commitment to upgrading infrastructure and ensuring safe movement throughout the state.

Earlier today Monday 6th Oct., 2025, a delegation of Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Special Marshals Akanran unit paid a Courtesy call to the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) Ona Ara Zonal Command.

The Seven-Man FRSC Special Marshals team led by Marshal S.M Amoo, the unit Coordinator was received and welcomed  officially by Commanders Kolapo Hammed and Ojedeji Bolanle on behalf of the Ona Ara  Zonal Commander, PRTS Rofiat Bolaji Abdullahi.

The FRSC Marshals Akanran unit Coordinator, in his introductory address, stated that they are on a familiarization Visit being the newly appointed special Marshals for the Akanran Division.

He pointed out that they would like to partner with OYRTMA in ensuring free flow of traffic and  Safety on our roads within Ona Ara zonal  Command.

While he introduced Regular Marshal A.M Adegbola,

Marshal J.O  Ajagbe as Secretary,  Marshal S.O Ayoade as Treasurer,

Marshal K.T Akintayo as Fin/Sec,

Marshal F.A. Ayanwole as Provost,

Commander Kolapo Hammed, Speaking on behalf of the Zonal Commander, mentioned that, apart from the few Officers on ground on their arrival, all the Zonal Operation team including the Zonal Provost I.O. Ogundiran were already on the field. He opined that both agencies have Complimentary roles in ensuring free flow of traffic and road safety. He assured the delegation of the unflinching Support and unwavering collaboration by OYRTMA whenever the need arises.

The attention of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has been drawn to false reports circulating on social media, particularly on Facebook, alleging that OYRTMA officials were responsible for the death of a commercial tricycle rider at the University of Ibadan axis on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.

We wish to state categorically that the report is untrue, misleading, and aimed at tarnishing the image of the Authority.

For the past three months, OYRTMA officials have been stationed at the U.I axis, enforcing compliance with traffic lights to ensure sanity and orderliness on our roads, an effort heavily supported by the financial commitment of the Oyo State Government.

On the said date, at about 11:30 am, a commercial tricycle with registration number MNY 805 QU willfully violated the traffic light. The rider was flagged down but attempted to escape dangerously. He was eventually apprehended at the Preboye traffic light. In the course of enforcement, the rider bit one of the officers and, in a desperate move to avoid lawful arrest, feigned collapse, pretending to be dead, ostensibly to incite mob action against OYRTMA personnel.

As the officers were being distracted by the crowd, the rider suddenly stood up, entered his tricycle, and sped off before the arrival of policemen from Sango Police Station.

Therefore, the allegation that OYRTMA officials killed a tricycle rider is not only false but also mischievous. To put the record straight, we pose the following pertinent questions to those spreading the rumors:

1. Who took the allegedly “dead” tricycle rider to the hospital?
2. Which hospital was he taken to, and which doctor certified him dead?
3. Where was his supposed corpse deposited?
4. Who removed the said tricycle from the scene?
5. Did the police officers who later arrived at the scene find a corpse or a tricycle?
6. Did OYRTMA officials abandon their duty post, or did they continue their lawful duties as evidence that no such death occurred?

These questions remain unanswered because the incident was clearly staged by the tricycle rider to evade the consequences of his traffic violation.

OYRTMA assures the public that it remains committed to carrying out its statutory duties in line with the law and will not be distracted by baseless allegations. We call on members of the public to always seek the truth and not be misled by unfounded speculations.

The Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has issued a directive mandating its officers to wear officially approved uniforms during enforcement operations.

This move comes after numerous complaints from the public regarding officers conducting arrests and enforcement activities while dressed in mufti and unapproved uniforms.

The Chairman, OYRTMA, Major Adesagba Adekoya (rtd.), disclosed this today, while  addressing all zonal commanders across Oyo State.

He said wearing uniforms is essential for maintaining professionalism, transparency, and public trust.

“The use of mufti for enforcement can lead to confusion, fear, and undermine the legitimacy of operations. Moreover, it opens officers to accusations of impersonation, extortion, and misconduct, ultimately damaging the reputation of OYRTMA”, he said.

“Officers are no longer permitted to participate in traffic enforcement operations while not in complete and officially approved OYRTMA”  Adesagba stressed.

He added that all enforcement activities must be carried out by officers fully dressed in authorised uniforms, with Zonal and Unit Commanders ensuring strict compliance within their commands.

He added, “Officers found violating this directive will face disciplinary action according to extant rules and regulations.”

Adekoya emphasized that uniforms symbolize authority, responsibility, and service to the public.

“Officers are reminded to conduct enforcement activities with civility, respect for citizens’ rights, and adherence to guidelines. This move aims to boost public confidence through professionalism and transparent conduct”, he continued.

“Officers are reminded that our primary role is to ensure safety and order, not to intimidate or harass. Enforcement must be conducted with civility, respect for the rights of citizens, and in strict adherence to the stipulated guidelines of the Authority.”

As Initiative aims to reduce road accidents through awareness, not just enforcement.

In a bid to reduce road accidents and improve traffic safety, the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has introduced a daily enlightenment programme targeting traffic offenders across the State.

The initiative was announced by the Executive Chairman of OYRTMA, Major Adekoya Adesagba (rtd), during a media briefing held in Ibadan on Wednesday.

He explained that the new measure focuses on education rather than punishment, with the goal of reshaping driver behavior and preventing repeat offences. Rather than imposing fines alone, traffic offenders are now required to attend awareness sessions before facing the traffic tribunal,” Major Adesagba stated.

The programme, which runs from Monday to Friday, educates offenders on common violations such as running red lights and dangerous driving—offences which, according to OYRTMA, have contributed significantly to road crashes, injuries, and fatalities in the State.

The OYRTMA chairman emphasized that the enlightenment sessions are part of a broader strategy to instill discipline among road users and promote a culture of safety on Oyo State roads.

Our goal is not only to enforce the law but to create a long-term change in driver behavior,” he added.

The agency encouraged all motorists to obey traffic regulations and support ongoing efforts to make the roads safer for all users.

In a bold move to promote transparency and improve service delivery, the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has unveiled an Online Public Complaint Channel designed to allow citizens to report misconduct, provide feedback, and suggest improvements on the activities of its personnel.

The new platform, accessible via https://complaint.oyrtma.com, enables the public to submit complaints either anonymously or with their identities disclosed—ensuring user confidentiality and ease of use.

According to a statement made available to the media in Ibadan, the Executive Chairman of OYRTMA, Major Adekoya Adesagba (rtd), said the initiative reinforces the agency’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and effective service delivery.

“This platform empowers the public to hold OYRTMA personnel accountable while providing us with valuable feedback to enhance our operations,” Adesagba said. “Every complaint will be treated with urgency and confidentiality.”

Key features of the complaint channel include; reporting of misconduct by OYRTMA officials; submissions of reports from the public or OYRTMA officers; option to file reports anonymously or with identity; a secure and user-friendly interface.

The agency urged all residents, motorists, and stakeholders to embrace the new initiative to foster a more professional and efficient traffic management system across Oyo State.
